When watching a film at the cinema you feel involved in the action. This experience is achieved by the use of speakers around the walls, dimmed lighting and high quality pictures. The main factor however is the clever balance of sound and the location of speakers.
Digital TV and DVDs capture this surround sound information and so it is possible to recreate your cinema experience at home. Internal TV speakers are just not able to reproduce this with the same degree of realism.
You do not need to dedicate a whole room to gain a good cinema experience. However, those that can afford the space can achieve the necessary balance of acoustics, sound, vision and lighting to very closely recreate the cinema experience.
The next evolution of viewing is High Definition (HD). This involves much higher resolutions, with a stunning level of detail in everything you watch. There are currently 35 full time HD channels running, with major broadcasters such as the BBC filming every programme they make in HD. To enjoy these you need an HD compatible flatscreen, and a Digital box to receive the channels.
Surround sound multi speaker systems are available, which reproduce the sound of the programmes and movies as the producers intended. These speakers can often be built in to ceilings/walls with concealed cabling, or concealed around the viewing room.
